The constituency of Gedling was created in 1983. The Borough of Gedling wards of Bonington, Burton Joyce and Stoke Bardolph, Carlton, Carlton Hill, Daybrook, Gedling, Killisick, Kingswell, Mapperley Plains, Netherfield and Colwick, Phoenix, Porchester, St James, St Mary's, Valley, and Woodthorpe.
Gedling parliamentary constituency is not the same as Gedling borough, and is home to approximately just over 70,000 electors.
Gedling was build on traditional industry, and has a rich history of textiles, coal-mining, home brewing and more. Present day Gedling has built upon this foundation, and is now a thriving mixture of different small and medium businesses.
Vernon won the seat in a landslide election in 1997, and has been the representing MP since then.
