Last week I met with The Albert Kennedy Trust. This is an LGBT youth homelessness charity: providing safe homes, mentoring, training, advocacy and support to young people who are homeless or living in a hostile environment after coming out to their parents, care givers and peers.
I was shocked to discover that:
- Centrepoint's most recent study identified that up to 150,000 young people are at risk of, or are currently homeless.
- Up to 24% of young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness identify as LGBT.
- 77% of LGBT youth cited parental rejection and abuse as the primary cause of their homelessness.
If you know any young person who may need support - The Albert Kennedy Trust has a digital support service called inter-AKT - www.inter-akt.plusguidance.com. This provides a space for young people at risk of homelessness, rejection or abuse to connect with eMentors and other digital resources.
