Vernon Coaker is the Labour MP for Gedling in Nottinghamshire, winning the seat in 1997 with a majority of 3,802. He has held positions in the Labour Shadow Cabinet, as both Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Shadow Secretary of State for Defence and Shadow Minister of State for Schools.

Vernon’s main policy interests are international development, foreign policy, social care, education, animal welfare and the environment.

Before becoming an MP, Vernon was Deputy Head Teacher at Bigwood School in Nottingham and has also taught at the Manvers Pierrepont, Arnold Hill and Bramcote Park schools. Vernon is married to Jackie and they have a daughter and a son. In his spare time, his interests include sport – he is a keen Spurs fan –taking countryside walks, and engaging in current affairs.

The Gedling constituency includes Arnold, Burton Joyce, Carlton, Colwick, Daybrook, Gedling, Mapperley, Netherfield, Stoke Bardolph and Woodthorpe.
