The Conference is organised annually by the Association of Labour Councillors (ALC) and the Local Government Association (LGA) Labour Group. Today Vernon was really pleased to visit The Good Shepherd Primary Catholic Academy in Gedling. The school is encouraging their pupils to think about and understand our democracy. Vernon was more than happy to help them out by speaking with the pupils about his job as an MP. He is pictured below addressing their assembly.

This evening Vernon was pleased to attend a WWI Commemoration Event at the Carlton Army Reserve Drill Hall. The evening was jointly organised by the Carlton & District Royal British Legion (RBL) and by the Netherfield & District Women's Institute (WI). The event is pictured below. This morning, Vernon thoroughly enjoyed his tour of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust's (NWT) Faith Marriott Nature Reserve, tucked into the heart of the Arnold community (pictured below). The 'secret garden' was kindly left to NWT in 1999 as part of the legacy of local resident Faith Marriott. Ms Marriott also donated the neighbouring house, which was subsequently sold to fund NWT's conservation work.

This week, Vernon has been privileged to take part in local and national Holocaust memorial events. He was present at Redhill Academy on Monday when Holocaust survivor Simon Winston spoke to students about his experiences during World War II. Vernon is pictured below with Mr Winston, whom he was honoured to speak with.

Vernon enjoyed celebrating Burns Night yesterday evening with the Gedling Constituency Labour Party. The local branch got together for a Burns themed fundraiser featuring music and traditional Scottish fare, including delicious Cranachan courtesy of Jackie Feeney (pictured below).

This morning Vernon was pleased to visit the Gedling Memory Café, a friendly and informal gathering of dementia patients and carers in Gedling. The cafés  are run by Alzheimer's Society whose staff are on hand to give practical information and emotional support, encouraging patients and carers to talk openly about living with dementia.

Today, Vernon voted against the government's plan to replace student maintenance grants with loans. The proposed policy change, announced during George Osborne's autumn statement, will adversely affect 500,000 of the poorest students in this country.
