Vernon joined local community members and councillors at the dedication service for John Manley who helped fight off 4000 Zulu Warriors at the Battle of Rorke’s Drift in 1879.
John Manley was one of only 154 courageous defenders, who held out against all odds versus the African forces to be later immortalised in the 1964 Michael Caine film Zulu.
Now a memorial has been laid in recognition of his involvement in one of the fiercest battles in British history.
Three generations of family attended the service at Carlton cemetery alongside members of the Royal British Legion and The Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry marching in full military regalia.
