Vernon Coaker MP, Labour’s Shadow Defence Secretary, responding to news that the Government is to commit to the F-35 project by ordering 14 aircraft, said:
“Labour welcomes this long overdue announcement. But it’s hard to have any confidence in a Government that has wasted so much time and such a lot of money even to get to this point.
“David Cameron’s decisions have cost several years of delay and hundreds of millions of wasted taxpayer pounds. In 2010, against all advice, he changed the initial order of the previous Labour government for these aircraft from F-35B to F-35C, only to change his mind back again two years later.
“There will be questions now about when these aircraft will become operational, and about how many will then be operational at any one time. The Defence Secretary needs to assure the British public that they are sufficient for the capabilities that the UK requires, and that they are on budget and on time.”
