Letter in Nottingham Post

My letter in today's Nottingham Post

Plenty of people have asked me recently how I intend to vote in the European Referendum. I want to be completely clear that I will be voting to REMAIN. My colleagues in the Labour Party and I will be campaigning hard for the UK to stay in Europe.

I believe in standing up for working people whose jobs depend on trade with Europe and I believe in standing up for the rights of everyone to be treated fairly at work, for the rights at work that are guaranteed by our membership of the EU.

I do not think the Leave Campaign have an effective answer to the threat to jobs, businesses and people’s standards of living. Indeed, the answer seems to be “don’t worry, it’ll be alright on the night” and that’s not good enough.

In the end, there is not one major issue facing us in the 21st century that will be solved by countries acting alone. As members of the European Union we are a proud, independent nation, standing alongside other member states because we achieve more together than we do alone.  We need to collectively challenge issues such as climate change, migration, global instability and the environment.  Working together on international and global issues offers a better future for all of us and is particularly important for our young people.
