Vernon spoke today at the Alliance Party Conference about a positive future for Northern Ireland. In the wake of yesterday's attack on a prison officer in East Belfast, he stressed the continued need to assert the supremacy of the rule of law in efforts to deal with the legacy of the past.

Yesterday, Vernon challenged the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Theresa Villiers, after her colleague fielded questions in the house pertaining to Northern Ireland and the European Union on her behalf.

Mrs Villiers has made clear that she will be campaigning to leave the EU, thereby opposing the government's official position on the matter.

Vernon does not think it acceptable that the Secretary of State avoids important questions about Northern Ireland and it's relationship with the EU.

This evening Vernon took part in a face to face debate with UKIP leader, Nigel Farage, to argue for an "In" vote in the upcoming EU Referendum. Today, Vernon was joined by Will Straw, Executive Director of Britain Stronger in Europe, as they visited the Northern Ireland Science Park (NISP) to promote the 'Stronger In' campaign (pictured below). The key message of the visit was that one in eight jobs in Northern Ireland are supported by European trade. As such, leaving the European Union would jeopardise manufacturing, agriculture, security and the peace programme in Northern Ireland.
