Peter Robinson steps down as DUP leader and NI First Minister

Following the announcement today that Peter Robinson (pictured below) will step down as Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader and First Minister of Northern Ireland, Vernon has paid tribute to Mr Robinson's career in Northern Irish politics.

In the House of Commons today, Vernon said that Mr Robinson's "contribution to peace and progress in Northern Ireland has been immense. He has taken tough decisions and tried to reach out to all communities. Northern Ireland is a better place in no small part thanks to his immense work. I join the Secretary of State... in wishing him well for the future."
