Vernon Coaker MP, Labour’s Shadow Defence Secretary, responding to the publication of the Public Accounts Committee’s report into Army 2020, said:
“This scathing report details a litany of catastrophic failures at the Ministry of Defence under David Cameron.
“Defence Ministers were advised that these plans would not work unless they were properly tested and monitored. They were warned that front-loading cuts to the Army and back-ending recruitment to the Reserves would leave the Armed Forces under strength. They were told that millions of pounds were being wasted on a failed IT system. They didn’t listen and didn’t act.
“These criticisms are hugely embarrassing for the Government during the week that the UK is hosting the NATO summit and when David Cameron has called for Britain’s international partners to meet their defence obligations. His advice to the neighbours would be better received and have greater credibility if he had his own house in order.”
