This weekend, Vernon was privileged to address the 2015 Ulster Unionist Party Conference.
Having returned to his previous role of Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Vernon was keen to reassure the UUP that the Labour Party remains committed to honouring existing agreements, to maintaining a bi-partisan approach, to respecting the principle of consent and to the primacy of the rule of law.
Vernon recognised that Northern Ireland has made fantastic strides in recent years, but that there is still work to be done. He paid tribute to all those who have contributed to the peace process and to the people who continue to strive for a safe and prosperous Northern Ireland today. He also said that it was important to take forward the recommendations of the excellent Heenan-Anderson Report.
